The day after Joe Masseria survived a point-blank shot in 1922, revenge was taken on the Gambino family’s Rocco Umberto Valenti right outside of John’s. Just as Valenti was leaving a lunch where Masseria had claimed to have set up as a peace offering, he was shot and killed by two gunmen, one of whom was Lucky Luciano. Shortly after, Masseria became imperative, living the rest of his life as Joe the Boss.
