A longstanding favorite of many old Chowhounds is the pickles at Johnnie’s Pastrami. They’re extraordinary, zippy, lively, sweet things. You’ll crave them for days, says JEN10. And SoCal Foodie has found the source: A-1 Eastern Homemade Pickle Company, which sells to the public, but in bulk only: The minimum order is five gallons.
A-1 isn’t really a retail place; it’s only open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., and it’s closed for lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can’t just stop in, either: Customers are asked to call in at least a day ahead to make their orders. But the A-1 staff are nice folks. Gary, who seems to do most of the public interaction, even gave SoCal Foodie a tour of the plant. But, if shopping for the pickles this way is too problematic, you can still get them anytime from Johnnie’s, reminds SoCal Foodie.
