Atayef (a.k.a. atayaf, atayif, katayif, or qatayef) is a fried pancakelike pastry filled with either honey and walnuts or a sweetened light cheese, and doused in syrup. It’s a must during the sweets-happy month of Ramadan (if you’re going to have only one meal a day, better make it a good one!).

There’s a new Mediterranean restaurant called Tartousa that makes great atayef, Melanie Wong heard from a cashier at Aladdin Deli & Market in San Mateo. The owner is Syrian, but the menu reflects other countries in the region.
