Tempting baked goods will be yours if you visit new Lexington bakery Cake, which is hard to find (with only a small sign), and has inconsistent hours. However, the owner Michelle is friendly and, though she’s mainly in business to make party cakes, she also bakes wonderful take-away cupcakes at $2 a pop.
The cupcakes are small and not too sweet; Eatin in Woostah bought a stash of seven and liked them all, particularly the Berries & Gold (butter cake filled with raspberry jam and topped with Chambord buttercream), the all-chocolate Midnight Delight, and the Minuteman, which she describes as a “delicious, moist little strawberry shortcake.” The porch is a nice place to sit and eat your cupcake.
Even if Cake is closed, cupcake samples and free coffee or tea are usually available in the lobby when patrons stop by, according to CarefulEaters.
