Before the days of plastic forks and to-go everything, people used to carry around their own cutlery when they went to friends’ homes or taverns. They even brought their own spices: During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, nutmeg was a hot seasoning for Sack Posset and other warming drinks. Fashionable ladies often carried their own silver nutmeg-grating boxes that looked like little snuff boxes. I found
a few on eBay and wished I had a couple extra G’s to spend. Let’s bring this tradition back!
