I was astonished by the sheer number and variety of farmers’ markets in Portland, Oregon, during a recent visit. My friend Gretchen Jackson (pictured at left) started the Montavilla Farmer’s Market and introduced me to Cellar Door Coffee, Todbott’s Triangles (onigiri rice balls), Sol Pops (savory Latin American ice pops), and much more. She has also partnered with a program called Market Chefs that gives market-goers information about shopping and cooking local food. When I was at Montavilla, stone-fruit canning and basic knife skills were being taught by friendly, knowledgeable experts.
