Flummoxed recently by what to do with a small bag of cherries in my freezer, I dug out a cookbook I bought a few years ago: Small-Batch Baking. It’s a collection of recipes that have been scaled down to yield two servings—a great thing if you don’t want leftovers or are cooking for a small group. I like that the recipes don’t call for any premade stuff either; it’s all scratch baking. I made the flaky cherry cobbler with my two cups of cherries that night, and have since made a tiny batch of the biscotti. So far I haven’t had any flops from the book, and the cobbler was especially good.
