The UK Independent reports on the latest theory as to why beekeepers are finding their hives empty this year: It’s thought that radiation from cell phones and other technological devices may be interfering with the navigation systems of bees and preventing them from returning to the hive.

The disappearance of these bee colonies is being called Colony Collapse Disorder. The problem began in the United States, with bee losses between 60 and 70 percent, and has since spread to Europe. As the Independent reports, a study at Landau University has “found that bees refuse to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby.” This may provide a clue to CCD.

The implications of the spread are alarming. Most of the world’s crops depend on pollination by bees. Albert Einstein once said that if the bees disappeared, ‘man would have only four years of life left’.

Yikes. Can I get my old landline back?
