For those who look to eat local by purchasing their food from nearby growers, buying live seafood off of a boat might seem like a dream. With a slight detour to Porto Bodega Marina, Melanie Wong made it a reality, and explains how hounds can do the same by scoring fresh Dungeness crabs and wild salmon from Sam Garcia’s boat, SamPam, in Bodega Bay.

Operating out of a mobile home bedecked with crab decorations, Garcia sells direct to customers, offering hefty live crabs for $4.99 per pound the day Melanie visited. He invited our reporter to head down to the boat to select her own crabs, and also offered to steam those crustaceans for customers who call in their orders in advance.

Melanie bought two crabs that weighed a combined 4.25 pounds, and reports they were fantastic when steamed later that evening.
