So inspired to meet Bertha Gonzalez Nieves, the CEO and Co-Founder of Casa Dragones Tequila (right on pic above). Bertha is the first woman to be accredited as a Maestra Tequilera (and if you google that term, Bertha’s Wikipedia article comes up first). Now that I’ve read all the awards and honors that have been bestowed upon her, I’m even more in awe of how much time I got to spend with her at the tasting! And very grateful to Neuehouse NYC for arranging this event for us.
Now onto the product. We tasted the Casa Dragones Joven, a super premium sipping tequila ($280 a bottle!!). Bertha took us through the process including how she initially got involved with tequila (Japan features prominently in the story!) and how meeting Bob Pittman (a founder of MTV and a serial entrepreneur), changed the trajectory of her career. Pittman believed in the idea of top-tier tequila and provided her with the funding and encouraged her to start the business.
The craftsmanship that goes into all aspects of this product is impressive (you can read more details about it on the Casa Dragones website here).
Bertha even had custom glassware made by Riedel especially for sipping this wonderful “Tastemaker’s Top Tequila” (per Forbes magazine).
If $280 is a little too steep, they also have a Casa Dragones Blanco which was created for those of us who sometimes prefer our tequila in a cocktail vs. straight up.
Big thank you to all my peeps at Neuehouse for making this tasting possible and to Naz Riahi, the Founder of Bitten (a company that organizes events around food) for moderating the discussion.
