ZITOUNE report

mrnyc | Sep 23, 2003 10:22 PM

ZITOUNE is the morrocan restaurant downtown on ganseevort in the meatpacking just across from RIO MAR and PASTIS. i stopped in for a solo dinner at the bar last night.

right away they bring you out some nice small slice chibatta style bread and olive tapenade to whet your appetite while you wait.

i had the chorba soup for a starter. its soup with finely diced vegetables, like zuchinni, celery and carrot. best of all was not just the paprika-y base but the thick olive oil it was topped with. what a tasty brand to use. also, it has a side of toast points that you should def use--very nice.

for a main i had the lamb tajine which i have had there before but not in a long while. again it was spot on. the lamb carrots and other vegetables were fork tender. and i'm a sucker for preserved lemons, i feel like a king eating them--its what elevates a dish that would otherwise be a lamb stew.

to drink i went native, i had a bottle of morrocan beer when i sat down. i couldn't resist the cool looking bottle---good job morrocan marketers you got me--but it was a pretty good beer. for the main i had a bottle of morrocan rose that was very nice, it was a creamy style of rose that i prefer (vs. thin/bitter which some can be).

total cost was $51 w/ tip. a little expensive but otherwise i was happy. great service. owner says they are doing fine steady business. ps---i hesitate to share this tip but i will---if you sit at the bar or outside you have the absolute best 'view' in manhattan, straight up 9th avenue---just stunning at night.
