Near Wyandanch LI Train Station

There's some good eating around the Wyandanch train station. Both these places are real bargains. Some parts of Straight Path can be questionable at night so you may want to go during the day.

I had some good stew chicken with roti (Jamaican flat bread) at Island Pepper Pot. The cabbage and other vegetables that came with it were crisp and fresh. The stew chicken had copious amounts of oil visible, but was not at all greasy tasting, in fact I used the roti to mop up all the sauce that was left after eating the chicken. In retrospect, I should have ordered this with the rice and peas, since eating the chicken with the roti dampened the taste of the sauce, which is why I saved the roti for mopping. They have Jerk Chicken on weekends only and also serve Jamaican breakfasts like Ackee and Saltfish, with yam, banana and dumplings. This is takeout only. Be sure to try some wonderful Jamaican drinks like Front-End Lifter, Agony or Peanut Punch. Be forewarned that anything with sea moss in it is thick and slippery. The nearby Cuyah (reviewed by Newsday and the Times) also has good Jamaican food in a more polished setting with sit down service available, but I think this kind of food is best a bit rough around the edges.

Today I was on my way to Island Pepper Pot for some of that stew chicken when I noticed Bella Oriente. It sounds like some kind of Chinese Food/Pizza nightmare, but it turns out to be an El Salvadoran deli. They have a large steam table, and some chairs and tables so you can sit there. I had a curry chicken stew over casiemento (beans and rice). It also came with some green beans. All the flavors came together to make a very tasty and hearty meal. My only complaint would be that the green beans were a bit soft. It came with two tortillas, which were not made to order unfortunately, but they tasted fresh and went well with the chicken. There were lots of interesting looking meat and vegetable dishes on the steam tables. They have pizza and heroes, too.
