Wondering About Moroccan in Wanaka

About 6 years ago, we had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant called The White House in Wanaka. We knew nothing about it before walking in. We were there in early October and it was cold and blustery. The place was in a white stucco building that looked a bit Moorish, with a blazing fire and a view of the lake. It was lovely inside.

We ended up having a marvelous dinner. I think that a husband and wife owned it. She cooked, he did the wine and maitre d'ing. They had loads of great wines by the glass. This was before the great stampede toward NZ wines that happened a couple of years later. I passed myself off as a NZ wine snob for a couple of years until folks came along who REALLY knew wines.

Anyway, we had a wonderful soup and fresh bread to start with, a tajine, and can't remember anything else specifically after 6 years, but the dessert was (uncharacteristically for a N. African place) sticky date pudding!

We left happy and full. Since then several of our friends have travelled to NZ and we've told them about the place. Apparently it is no more and hasn't been for several years. On the chance that some local reads this, now that Wanaka is big in the wine trade, and knows of this place and/or the couple that ran it. Maybe they opened another place elsewhere? Maybe they gave it up and became opera singers or brick masons....
