Stopped into Union around 9pm with my beloved, hoping for an app or two at the bar, but it was packed. We grabbed a cocktail (excellent bartending here) and lurked, hoping for a pair of bar seats. No luck after ten minutes: we were ready to head down the street, but the manager/owner offered us a table in the nearly full dining room without our even asking. We happily accepted.
Two gorgeous plates of soup to start, artichoke and green garlic, lovely chewy float of Parmesan toast. Second course of a codcake app -- which I had already tried and loved on the brunch menu -- with crunchy bits of asparagus and fennel. Shared a very fine, spring-tasting entree of sweet pea ravioli with pea tendrils in a puddle of broth scented with multiple fresh herbs, a trademark here. Dessert of maple bread pudding with marshmallow ice cream, gorgeous.
As usual, very solicitous service by a tag-team of at least three different servers. Add a half bottle of Steele Syrah, an LBV port, and an espresso: check came to $90 with tax. More than we planned on spending, but a superb meal, greatly helped by the entire staff's extraordinary determination that we have a good time. This without a reservation on a very busy night.
The food at this place never floors me, it's merely very good, but I continue to be impressed with the culture of service here: it keeps us coming back again and again.
