weekend musings: artichoke, kingswood, grom, ditch plains

figured id share some random bits on my weekend eatings:

- drove by artichoke at 11:30pm on friday evening to find them opened with little to no wait. even though i had a big dinner, my friend and i went in and bought 4 squares each to go.

i had one in the car and the crust was very cracker-like. francis was not there and i didnt recognize any of the guys inside. very inconsistent place but the squares were still quite excellent...particularly the next day as i reheated them.

their squares are nothing short of an instant smash but everything else, i just dont understand why people go crazy for the artichoke slice.

- kingswood for dinner on sat evening. second time ive been there in nearly 3 weeks. by far the loudest restaurant ive been to since barbuto with the doors closed. for a dinner date, very hard to hear...that said, i the service is surprisingly strong...did not wait one moment for my table to be ready even though the place was packed.

foodwise, i was hoping for their excellent soft shell crab special but they didnt have it. had some crab/avocado appetizer which was decent but nothing amazing. i opted for the cod...something i never do and it was quite tasty...a good summer dish. with some japanese mushroom caps and salsa verde. my date had the duck which is a great preparation and a generous portion.

- went to grom for dessert...that place should pay rent to the parks dept for their use of father demo square. the place is an institution down there and a great location for them. had the hazelnut gelato which is out of this world. expensive but a treat.

- ditch plains...felt like seafood for dinner last night and mary's was closed on sundays. finally decided to try ditch plains. bad idea. $28 lobster roll was an insult. it was nothing short of mediocre lobster salad...like you'd get at a deli...on a non toasted potato bun. came with cheap sweet potato chips which were garbage. the fries i ordered were ok but $6 is a bit much no?

service was meh...our waiter was a bit over the top and annoying.

definitely not returning.
