I've just returned from a stellar week on Cape Cod, made stellar in part by the recs of the board regulars - thanks guys! As we had a beach rental near Chatham, we did quite a bit of in-house dining but here are some restaurant highlights:
I had lobster rolls in several places, including the perennial favorite - Arnold's, but found the ones at the Chatham Pier Fish Market were the best. There was more lobster in the roll than at Arnold's and the flavor of it shone through better as well. As an added bonus, standing at the rail of the pier and watching the seals cavort below as I munched the tasty roll, made the experience sublime. Thanks Cape Cod Guy for that recommendation - it was spot on!
The chowder at the Lobster Pot was great, a lot better than at Chatham Pier.
PB Boulangerie in Wellfleet had a huge, slow-moving line and it was totally worth the wait. I've spent a lot of time in Europe, and this place can compete with the best there. Awesome breads and sweet treats.
A group of us went to Embargo in Hyannis on Tuesday, when all their tapas are half-price. We had no trouble getting a reservation for 8 ppl same-day. The food was great and it is easy to see why this is considered one of the best in town.
The recommendation by CC Guy and everyone else to pull out all the stops and indulge in a meal at 28 Atlantic was also spot-on. It's expensive, but the food is incredible, the service perfect, and the setting is unbeatable. I can easily understand how this is regarded as perhaps the best restaurant in New England.
On Martha's Vineyard, we went for fried clams in Menemsha at The Bite. We were all pretty underwhelmed by this place and found it way overpriced with no better quality than any average-quality clamshack that litters the area. None of us would particularly recommend it.
Nantucket was much better for food, (and in general as a destination, we thought). We ended up at Galley Beach and the food was very good. So was the setting right there on the beach.
We did our own clambake on our beach, digging a pit, collecting washed-up seaweed and rocks, and buying chicken, sausage, potatoes, corn, garlic, onions and two kinds of clams ( from Young's Fish Market, another board recommendation). We made cheescloth bundles of all the goodies, brushed them with garlic-infused olive oil and enjoyed the beach and sunset views - they dont get any better than on Cape Cod. I'll be back :) Thanks again Chowhounds for all the great advice!
