Here is a warning about Cipriani's in Venice. My travelling companions insisted on going over to the Giudecca to have dinner at the Cipriani Hotel. I resisted until I discovered that there were two restaurants - the very expensive, formal one and an informal more moderately priced one called "Cips." Cips has lighter fare and is located on the terrace with a lovely view of the main Venetian island. Ok, I said I would go. Before leaving for Italy we made a reservation by E-mail and held it with a credit card. On arriving at Ciprianis we were told they did not have our reservation, would not seat us at all (even if we waited) and that despite the fact that Cip's was clearly not full. Instead the maitre di "offered" to let us eat at their expensive restaurant (very empty) and we could have a drink while they readied one of their many available tables (not a free drink even). There was no apology, nothing. In fact they were very rude about the whole thing. Needless to say we refused their "generous" offer and left.
