I had heard here and elsewhere about Chiado on College Street in Toronto, and gave it a try on Wednesday night. The meal was fabulous. I was dining with a very pregnant friend who wanted a glass of wine, but has discovered that people yell at her when she does so in public, so I had one of their "by the glass" Portugese reds that was just fine. She sneaked a taste behind a menu. Before dinner, I had a simple but nice white Rainha Santa Lacrima Port.
Our appetizers were goat cheese over roasted eggplant, and grilled squid: Both great. Mains were both from that night's specials, a redolent fish stew with salmon, cod, skate, clams, etc. in a lobster broth; and a perfectly-done pan-seared yellowfin tuna with a spicy crust. I had a dried fruit tart for dessert, that was chewy and rich, and my companion had some sort of white chocolate chessecake-but-more-like-a-mousse-if-you-know-what-I-mean concoction; her verdict was that I had won the dessert contest. We both had orange pekoe tea that was delightfully full of orange flavour. Imagine!
All-in-all, one of the best meals that I've had recently, although the carnivorous chowfest the previous night down the street at Dipamo's Barbecue with my brother is right up there, too!
