Vin Rouge revisited (Durham)

Sant | Mar 31, 200510:31 AM

It was my wife's birthday so we went to dinner at a closeby restaurant since the sitter was available for only 2 hours. The weather was perfect yesterday so we sat outside. Their courtyard dining area is quite nice-- other than when a rmbling Harley or a screaming fire truck isn't going by.

My wife really liked her pinot noir recommendation, her oyster gratin app was a decadent dish of oysters, bacon, and gruyere cheese. Her entree was beef burgandy with mashed potatoes. Dessert was a dark chocolate mousse. Everything of hers was quite good.

I had the mixed greens with walnuts, blue cheese, and lardon. The greens had some clearly spoiled pieces of lettuce, and I didn't like the vinegar to oil ratio of my dressing (too much vinegar). I fared much better with my entree of steak frites. The steak was a hefty portion of NY strip with herb butter, slightly overcooked for the medium rare that I requested. The frites were awesome. Shoestring cut, lightly salted, and very crispy. Dessert was apple tart tatin, not too sweet-- quite good except for an area of the crust that was burnt.

The bill including 20% tip was $90.20. Perhaps a little high for bistro fare but about standard for a nice meal these days. I was happy enought o recommend the place and return in the future.
