Victoria/Vancouver Report (long)

After gleaning lots of information from the Canada board, I took my parents (from San Francisco) on a trip to Victoria and Vancouver. Highlights included:

Don Mee Restaurant in Victoria. We ate there twice in one day - dim sum and dinner. Dim sum was quite good, the ha caw were plump and stuffed with shrimp, the siu mai was tasty and the combination spare rib/chicken feet clay pot rice was excellent. The banana leaf wrapped sticy rice dish was just OK. Dinner was quite good although service was somewhat slow. We had the steamed lobster with soy sauce, ginger and green onion. It was quite good and not too expensive at under $50 CDN for a two and quarter pound lobster. We also had sizzling ginger beef, which was tender and well flavored, and chinese broccoli with oyster sauce.

In Vancouver our absolute favorite was Bin 941. My Dad wanted to return for dinner the next day! We walked right in at about 6pm, sat at the chef's table (three stools by the kitchen) and had the crab cakes, halibut, risotto, the mussels and fries. We also had a glass of wine/sangria each. The "bin-gria" was refreshing and not overly sweet - a definite hit! Total: $90 CDN. We were too full for dessert but had some cheesecake at Death By Chocolate after a long walk.

We also loved Hon's Wun Tun in Chinatown for a quick cheap dinner. We had a seafood claypot which was delicious and stewed brisket in black bean sauce. Mom tried the fish ball and wun tun soup which was OK. The fried pork dumplings here were also good. Total for three people $35 CDN.

We also tried Park Lock in Chinatown for dim sum. It was good, not great. The best dish was the eggplant stuffed with shrimp. Total for 3 people $25 CDN.

The bargain of the trip was at Captain Wa located at the food court in the Richmond Public Market. One crab cooked to order (we chose spicy pepper and garlic) $5.99 CDN! We saw locals buying them by the dozen for take-out. Two item combo was $3.50 CDN.

Thanks to all who have contributed in the past who helped make this a great trip. My parents couldnt believe that I was getting all these great recommendations from the Internet!
