I'm interested in learning about places (particularly in NYC) which offer a complete immersion in an "experience."

Example: I used to go to a Moroccan restaurant in Philadelphia (this was 15-20 years ago, I don't know if it exists any more) which was on a small sidestreet downtown. You would find the doorway, step down through curtains, and into a little time/space capsule into this exotic place. Dining on cushions on the floor for 3 hours, together with the music and the costumes and the decor made you feel like you had gone to another place altogether.

How authentic? I cannot say. But it was transporting. (Especially to my teenage and less-jaded self.) I'm not opposed to a little Disney-ification of my experience in most cases.

So where have you gone that made you feel like you had left your existence behind?
