The Tragic Cheeseburger

OK, maybe not quite tragic, but an absolute ripoff. I worked at the SVA theater this evening, and was feeling peckish after I got off. Having just read the VV's "Best of 23rd St.," I decided to go to the Guilty Goose, to sample the bratwurst over spätzle that they recommended. But seeing it cost $24 (something not mentioned in the article), I thought maybe I'd be better off trying something else (I don't mind paying good money for good food, but this just struck me as a bit too...too). I should've followed my first instinct, to go for a salad instead, but no! I had to second guess myself, and went for the burger.

What I got, for $16 (before tax, tip and a $10 glass (not even a full pint!) of witbier), was an underseasoned, underwhelming cheeseburger with OK toppings, and the type of shoestring fries that, while not being quite burnt, were so overcooked as to be completely dry and crunchy, not crispy. The best that can be said about it was that the burger was cooked to the requested medium rare.

The moral of my sad, sad (and don't tell me that the tears are not welling up inside you!) tale is that if you're gonna pay $30 for a burger and a beer, make sure that you do it at the Spotted Pig.

The end.
