Just wanted to give a specific shout out to the salsa from Topanga Café on Fourth Avenue near MacDonald. We used to get it in university, along with their very competent chips, for parties. It is as good as it ever was, with loads of cilantro and the welcome addition of garlic, which I don't put in my homemade salsa casera.
It is also still a super value, at $5.95 for 16 oz (it also comes in 8 and 4 oz containers). I get the regular, but there is an extra hot option for a buck more for you diehard chile heads.
And if you have leftovers, warm gently and use on your homemade huevos rancheros with a tin of La Sierra refried pinto beans and some white corn tortillas that you purchased from Fresh is Best on Broadway. Ideal hangover/New Year's Day brunch fare.
While you're at Topanga, nab a slice or three of their outstanding chocolate cake for afters. You won't be sorry.
