TOMATO PIE - Home Cooking Dish of the Month, August 2018

masha | Jul 31, 201802:14 PM     119

Welcome to our Reporting Thread for our August Dish of the Month (“DOTM”). For those new to our DOTM series, the purpose of this thread is to encourage hounds to prepare the selected dish throughout the month of August 2018 and use this thread to report results, share pictures and recipes, and exchange tips and ideas.

During August 2018, we will be preparing Tomato Pies. Thanks to all the enthusiasts who supported other dishes during our nomination and voting phases. We hope that you will join with us in making Tomato Pies during August, and that you will return for future Nominations and Voting Threads to re-nominate the dishes that you supported and suggest new dishes. See these links for more details as to how we selected tomato pie: for Nomination, https://www.chowhound.com/post/dish-m... for Voting, https://www.chowhound.com/post/dish-m....

So what is a “tomato pie” anyway, and how does it differ from a pizza? See this article from Eater, which describe the Philadelphia/ Trenton-style version of tomato pie as a pizza-like dish without any cheese and with a thicker layer of sauce, https://www.eater.com/2016/8/19/12525.... There are also “Southern” tomato pies which are prepared with a traditional pie shell and use mayonnaise or white sauce to bind the tomatoes. In addition to the boxed discussion in the Eater article, see this Wikipedia link, for more information about Southern Tomato Pies, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souther...

Whichever kind of tomato pie that you decide to make, there should be a bounty of fresh tomatoes during August. You might want to start your recipe search by checking out the links from Eat Your Books that Madrid linked in a post on the Voting thread, https://www.chowhound.com/post/dish-m....

Some other recipes to get us started:

But, please respect the copyright of the recipe’s author by either: (a) including a link directly to the source of the recipe, or (b) if no link is available, use your own words to paraphrase and explain the instructions for making the dish (although you may directly quote any list and quantities of ingredients).
