is it necessary to tip the matre d' of a rest. if they get your jackets for you when you leave?

they check your name against the reservation when you arrive, and someone else seats you. When you go to leave, they grab your coat check tag from you and hand you your coats, but it seems like they don't normally do it (obviously not a coat check person).
What's proper here?
