Thai Tea Gelato @ Chai Yo

Melanie Wong | Aug 29, 200304:13 AM

Thursday I stopped by the sweet shop adjoining Chai Yo, the Thai restaurant in SF's Polk Gulch. My mission was to find coconut ice cream. Chai Yo does have the type imported from Thailand, made from coconut milk without any dairy. A sample taste was fine, but then something else caught my eye. The ice cream case also has gelato from The Last Scoop in Berkeley. A tub with the distinctive orange-y color of Thai red tea turned out to be a custom gelato of that flavor. It really does taste like a Thai ice tea with a little bit of tannic bite in the finish to balance the sweetness. The gelato is dense with elastic heavy body, although it’s stored a little too warm and melted quickly. A single cup is $2.25 – not very much for something so special.
