There is a new restarant called "Thai Boom" that just opened on 10863 Venice blvd a few blocks west of Overland right near Cafe Brazil. Finally a place as good as Thai town restaurants in west la
The best thing I've had so far is called "Green Mango Salad". This is not to be confused with SomTam Papaya Salad. It's a completely different taste, very complex...spicy, sweet, salty, sour. It took me right back to Bangkok. This salad is probably my favoriet thai dish in L.A. right now. I haven't tried their other salads but they have some interesting stuff, like som tam with salted crab.
This place is super cheap and has a 20% discount on everything for their grand opening....plus the serve lunch specials at Night...so you can eat a full meal for like 5 bucks...incredible really.
So far my experience with the menu has been a bit uneven. Some things are good, some mediocre. The mango salad though is so transcendent that it is enough to get me going there several times a week.
They have a lot of things on the menu you don't see at other thai places.
Here are some other things I've tried.
1/ Orange chicken- This tastes a bit like Chinese Thai...batter friend bits of chicketn....pretty tasty. My girlfriend is in love with this dish and eats it every time we go.
Hainan chicken- Bits of sliced chicken with an intersting tangy sauce of ginger and ???
Kra por pla-Crab meat with quail eggs, blood cake, fish. I'm digesting this as I write. It comes in a RAd na esque soup base. I though it was fair, my girlfriend loved it. I'm not big on innards, but it wasn't bad.
Won ton soup- My girlfriend says this is good. Haven't tried it myself.
Duck over rice- heard this was good.
BBq Combo- comes iwht chicken , pork ribs, and beef (it says ribs, but it was more like sliced kalbi) The beef was great, Chicken was mixed (dark was delicious, white a bit dry, but flavoring was excellent) Pork ribs, i found to be lacking, but my girlfriend liked them.
Broccoli with peanut sauce- Exactly what it says it is.
Roast pork/ chinese broccoli over rice- This is simialr to what you find at the restuarant called Yai in Thai town. It's crunchy pork with chinese broccoli over rice. It rivals Yai's but you can't beat Yai's specail sauce. Not sure if this is actually on the menu. We saw an employee eating it and asked for it.
Royal fried rice- Shrimp paste fried rice Comes with tasty thai sausage. Good but, shrimp paste is an aquired taste.
Tom yam soup- Standard, Good.
Cashew nuts chicken- my girlfriend said this was not good. I didn't try it.
Pad thai- This was not good. Doughy noodles. I would try it again though, maybe it was an off day or something.
According to the menu I have it says free delivery (but it doesn't say where) open every day 11-10pm 310-848-8291.
This place has so far been pretty empty. From the outside you wouldn't think it was anything special. I'd almost given up on west side thai, so I almost didn't try, but it's within walking distance of my girl friends. I hope they can get enough business to stay open.
