There were a couple of threads where this place came up recently, so I decided to go & check it out. It is in a newly rehabbed building in downtown Lombard - high ceilings, wooden floors, one side for carry out, one for eat in. 3 of us went for lunch and tried the sandwiches - bbq pork, turkey and brisket, plus the Chili in spicy form, and NE Clam Chowder, curly fries, and slaw.
The bad: their sauce includes liquid smoke (but continue, because there is hope) and comes in mild and spicy. If you can stand liquid smoke, the spicy is okay.
The okay: "barbecue turkey" is smoked turkey, sliced thin, and served on a roll with sauce. Okay in my book. Pork and Brisket are sliced thin, tho not as thin as Turkey and served the same (as opposed to shreded pork). Meat was pleasantly flavorful, and generally pretty good. Appears to be smoked separately, and I do not think they used liquid smoke on the pork and beef (cannot be sure on the turkey). Sauce on the pork was a little sweet for my taste. Generally, this is a tomato, brown sugar, and hot pepper barbecue sauce. Brisket was the best, and pretty good - flavorful and fairly tender (well done in the middle and rare on the outside, I swear I saw the pink ). The bottled sauce on the tables is okay if you do not mind liquid smoke (which I mention because while I can live with it, I know some hate it).
The good: Clam Chowder was pretty good with a lot of clams in it. And the chile (meat only, seems to be mostly pork) in spicy version (there are mild and super spicy as well) was excellent.
Sides were okay, but not memorable.
I would go back for the soup & chile, as well as to try some other offerings, such as the BBQ Ham. Link below. The Algonquin location is still in operation, according to their menu, tho it has disappeared from the web site. As you can see on the menu, prices are reasonable, and the servings are decent, tho not overly large at lunch.
