On my recent trip to CA from NYC, I had a chance to visit some of my favorite Mexican spots from LA to SF, and my favorite among them all remains Tacos Moreno in Santa Cruz (Water Street near the end of Seabright). In light of all the Mexican food threads on the boards here, I've heard no mention of this place, and wanted those of you in the area to sample the goods. The menu is very small, tacos or burritos filled with your choice of carnitas, al pastor, chile verde, chicken (the least interesting), and bean & cheese. The corn quesadillas here are also very tasty. They've made a few changes over the years to appeal to the local gringos (flour tortilla quesadillas and discontinued my favorite tongue filling), but the integrity of the flavor has remained. The carnitas are done perfectly, the al pastor flavored flawlessly, and the quesadillas are the best. Like a true burrito, there's no rice to muck things up -- just meat, beans, cabbage (not lettuce), and their salsa flecked with charred tomato and chiles. This has been the pinnacle for my taco/burrito tastes and nothing in SF compares. LA, well, I've had a few good competitors. La Super-Rica in Santa Barbara is also quite good, but a different creature in my book. What are you waiting for?
