I've been wanting to eat at Sushi Ryo for a long time, but I'm afraid that my dinner there was very mixed. I can see why they want to move. They're located in a random mini-mall (NE corner of Santa Monica and Highland) and the people and decor seem tired. A refrigerator in the corner grinds out a staticky noise that makes it hard to think. I got the six-piece sashimi plate, uzaku, grilled cod, and some sushi. The star of the show, both the sashimi and sushi, was the pike, which had an excellent briny kick to it. The other sashimi, though, ran from good to nearly tasteless. The uzaku was pretty good, with a toasty unagi. The grilled cod was awful, the worst thing I have ever eaten in a Japanese restaurant. It had a scary translucent quality to it, and I should have sent it back. The other sushi besides the pike were tuna (rather good), unagi (good), and egg (not so good). The menu is similar to that at Yabu, minus all the deep-fried stuff and a lot of the noodle options, but the quality and general atmosphere didn't nearly match Yabu. I hope that they get their act together when they move to another location.
