Substituting half & half for heavy cream?

I'm planning on making the pumpkin pots de creme from the NY Times for a Thanksgiving dinner we're attending. When my husband couldn't find heavy cream, he was advised by the "helpful" supermarket employee to get half & half. Do I need to make another run to the market, or can I get away with this?
