Steamed artichokes -- techniques?

I made steamed artichokes last night...I like them pretty simple -- just steamed and served with melted butter. I used the Joy of Cooking recipe and steamed them (upside-down) for 45 minutes in about 2 inches of water. They tasted fine but there was barely ANY artichoke heart. I bought them last week -- maybe this was the problem? Any thoughts welcome...or better cooking suggestions!
