As promised, I'll report on the St. Augustine restaurants kindly recommended by Florida board experts.
I doubt if I could have picked a better introduction to St. Augustine than O'Steens Restaurant. It's no-nonsense decor and friendly waitstaff reminded me of Connecticut's famous Lenny&Joe's Fish Tale. After tasting their excellent Minorcan clam chowder (spiced up with local Datil peppers), I doubt if I'll ever be satisfied with the Manhattan type again (but I'll still reserve a place for the Boston variety.) Their fried shrimp and crabcakes hit the spot for lunch. O'Steen's does not take reservations, but we only had a short wait for seating. They are normally open 11-8:30 Tues-Sat. We entered somewhat exhausted from climbing the 219 steps of the St. Augustine lighthouse, but left happy and gustatorially content.
I'll add further reviews whenever I get a shot at my grand-daughter's computer.
