Okay, so I didn't get to actually try them, after a couple of rounds of appetizers and more rounds of drinks, but I'm heading back soon for recon. The nachos were HUGE and came out piping hot with ALL the fixin's.
All this at Jose's Mexican on Sherman Street in Cambridge, behind Porter towards the Huron Village area. There's plenty of free parking right next door. Finally checked it out after months in the new 'hood. It's been under new management for just under a year and the food rocked. No frills, mind you, but certainly fills that guilty pleasure food craving
We started with an appetizer that was called something like bandileros, but not. It was shredded beef rolled in small flour tortillas and fried and came on a platter with a dish of 5 layer dip - refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, etc. Sinful! The guacamole is out of this world - not overdone at all, really fantastic flavor. We also ordered the homemade jalapeno poppers. Big jalapenos filled with that liquid-ish cheese that you try not to wonder about. The peppers were rolled in smashed up corn tortilla chips and fried. My only complaint is that they weren't hot enough. Then we ordered the guacamole (we needed more - it's that good) and the pico de gallo with some chips. The big bowl of pico de gallo was fantastic - well seasoned, hot! and great lime flavor. Then we moved on to a 1/2 order of the steak fajitas with grilled vegetables and flour tortillas. Steak was well seasoned, flavorful and the veggies were great. All this, plus 2 margaritas and 4 beers was about $45 pre-tip.
Good news: looks like they're going to start serving brunch and the menu looks goooood. The usual huevos rancheros, plus a couple of other Mexican/Latin American dishes that I can't quite recall but looked very appetizing, and then all the usual suspects - pancakes, omelettes, etc. Brunch prices looked very reasonable, too.
