Sona vs. Spago: Tasting Menu Shoot-Out

While to oft-discussed Spago menu de gustation is indeed quite good, I was really knocked out by Sona's last night. It is 89 bucks --without wine pairings. There is a $119 version with a few more couses and expensive ingredients as well. I found it far lighter and containing a more varied palette of flavors than Spago's. The room is also more soothing than the din of Spago. I couldn't possibly go through the whole menu as I didn't take notes and each small dish was so intricate, containing varied subtle sauces and sides, however a few standouts (copied from their website) were:

barely cooked Venezuelan Shrimp, Chilled Green Papaya Soup, Pickled Papaya, Micro Basi

Chino Farm Heirloom Tomatoes, Watermelon, Crème Fraiche, Basil

Big Eye Tuna, Eggplant, Glazed Shallots, Watercress, Yuzu Vinagrette

Hot White Chocolate Mousse Tart, Fragrant Plums, Shiso Sorbet
