Soft-Shells at Dupont Farmer's Market

Marty L. | May 16, 2004 10:03 PM

I bought a half-dozen shoft-shells (cleaned) from the fishmonger at the Dupont Circle Farmer's Market this morning for $15 -- total! -- and they were by far the tastiest soft-shells we've had in many a moon -- better than the early-season crabs at Full Kee; considerably better than the $11-sandwich crab at Breadline; and way, way, better than the $31-for-two order of crabs at Nora. (I haven't tried CF Folks' crabs yet this season.) I made the simple Shiela Lukins saute recipe from Epicurious (linked below); but there are plenty of other good recipes on the General Topics Board and elsewhere.

I repeat: $2.50 a crab, and utterly delicious. (Because of a smaller yield, these same crabs were $6.00 a piece last week -- which would still be a great deal, but at $2.50 . . . wow.)
