Smithsonian Folk Life Fest: Food! Yes, but....

Just got back from the Festival. Food {food sources & preparation} is a main feature of this year's event, but most exhibits concern everything but eating. Cooking demos, displays of herbs & spices to sniff at, how to make cheese/tofu, where honey comes from, etc. Pretty basic. Best: in the professional cooking tent, two young cooks carving melons into fantastic shapes. If you want to eat, there is the Amerian Cafe (chicken hotdog, $5; teriyaki, salmon salad). And the Latino Cafe (grilled chicken, salad, fried yucca, $7). And the Oman Cafe (two miskaks [kebabs]with rice for $9). And the Forest Service Native-American Cafe. I had the venison stew ($4 for a half pint of OK and a friend had the buffalo burger ($6 for buffalo patty on deep-fried bread with slice of processd cheese, reported to be dry and tasteless). The Oman exhibits were fascinating; run to your atlas!
