In this month's Westways (the magazine that comes with your membership in the Auto Club), the restaurants section is focused on budget eats, and Skaf's Grill in North Hollywood was featured.
I've been eating at Skaf's for years and I've never, ever had a bad meal. You can't go wrong with the specials written up on the whiteboard by the soda fountain, and the grilled meats (particularly the shish kabob) are divine.
The prices SEEM high ($8.95 for a two-skewer chicken meal) until you realise that it comes with probably 12 oz. of chicken, a quart of rice, a heaping plate of cabbage salad with lemon-sumac dressing, a dish of the best hummus in the city (bar none) and pita bread. I'm a big guy and even I can't finish a whole meal at Skaf's in one sitting.
It's so good that I once rearranged flights home from a business trip so that I could get Skaf's on the way home before they closed for the night.
