Silver Spring "revitalization"

Just visited the new downtown SS, brought to you courtesy of Maryland taxpayers. Chalk one up for the mallization of America. Foodwise, very depressing. Wall-to-wall mediocre chain food, no family businesses in sight and if they're not in sight people are unlikely to walk there. Small businesses and family-owned places there are doomed.
Had a couple meals there. Tried pseudo-French Great Eggspectations. OK eggs and crepes, but half the place was eating hamburgers and fries and bad salads for God's sake. One Italian place looked good, everywhere else appeared to feature mass-produced corporate semi-edibles. Even the Lebanese Taverna is not handling expansion well - the only really good things I had there were their hummus and bread. If there's a next time, I'll probably just go to Whole Foods and eat from the deli. Definite overdevelopment - three movie complexes within two blocks. My guess is that the most of the area will go belly-up in a few years once people realize there's nothing to do there but 100 movie screens and Red Lobsters or Chick O Files or whatever they call it.
