Shimizu report - definitely worth a visit

bh | Mar 25, 2005 04:00 PM

Quick trip report on Shimizu (51st between 8th and 9th, on the south side of the street). After hearing positive feedback elsewhere on the board, I went to try it today for lunch. Reasonably priced and extremely good. I'll definitely go back.

I had the Omakase which, at $34, included otoro, uni, unagi, kampachi, king salmon, ama ebi, the fried head of the shrimp, negitoro roll, surf clam, red snapper and one or two others that I can't recall.

For dessert, I had flan. Not something I would have normally ordered (even though a number of Japanese restaurants do a great job with custards, puddings, etc.), but the chef recommended it. Glad that I did. It was surprisingly good.

The sushi was very fresh and traditionally prepared. No sauces or elaborate combinations.

I'm not a good enough writer to describe sushi in any detail. Will just say that I thought it was delicious and noteworthy. The otoro, uni, kampachi, ama ebi and ebi fry in particular were terrific.

Staff was very friendly and accessible.

By way of reference, other usual sushi places include: Tsuki and Gari.
