I recently found a new place called Shannon's Texas BBQ in Greenfield Park about 6 or 7 miles down 52 from Ellenville, near Dairyland. They have their own smokehouse where the smoke what amounts to the best smoked brisket, chicken, ribs and pork I've ever had. I am a New Yorker in the gourmet food industry here and have a weekend home in the Catskills. The discovery of Shannon's has made a real impact on my culinary life there. The place's decor is pleasant but not special; service is extremely friendly and enthusuastic; and the meats are marvelous and side dishes very good. They also do carry out. It's rare that we get really good food in this pretty culinarily barren area, so please go and enjoy. My particular favorite is the smoked brisket.
Just one other place to mention is Luzon Station in Hurleyville. I had dinner there last night and it is worthy of praise for their really well prepared and somewhat inventive food and very lovely service. We had the "Crispy" Duck which although not very crispy, was absolutely perfectly done to exactly the right temperature, thus absolutely delicious, with a touch of what seemed like hoisin and some other Asian style flavors. We also had the very marinated skirt steak which was very good. The leftovers made for a wonderful topping this afternoon for a caesar style salad.
I MUST SAY HOWEVER, THAT YOU SHOULD PLEASE TRY AND SUPPORT THE WONDERFUL SHANNON'S, AS FOOD LIKE THIS IN OUR AREA IS SCARCE.
