Shanghai Village? any info? and other Chinatown stuff

deena | Oct 19, 200303:09 PM

Does anyone know what's going on with Shanghai Village (on Grand near Mott), which is now shuttered up and has a "closed for renovation" sign? I am hoping they really will re-open, as I thought the food there was quite wonderful, and their dumplings in particular were spectacular, better, imho, than Joe's Shanghai and others (although I haven't been to Joe's Ginger yet). I know some folks on this board had an issue with this place in the past re some sanitary issues and the use of a sink, but I have had consistently wonderful meals here, and the people were very friendly. When an out-of-town friend was complaining that he couldn't find a certain kind of hot pepper in Providence, the lovely woman (who I guess was the owner) actually went around the corner to find it for him!! If anyone has any info about this place, please post it. And if it does re-open, I would urge one and all to check it out, and give it a second chance.

Re the recent post about New Malaysia: I just want to heartily concur. I especially love their achat (spicy Malysian salad), ipoh bean sprouts, and mixed vegetable curry noodle soup. I live very close to Chinatown, and this is one of my very favorite spots. Also don't forget the fabulous and inexpensive soup at BoKy, which seems to be strangely under-represented on this board.

I am fairly new to Chowhound, and have so much enjoyed reading and searching all your posts. They are really great! Thanks especially for Sripaphai!
