SF: Israel Kosher Meat Poultry and Deli – cheese and poppy seed strudels, fluden and cheesecake

This strictly Kosher market has a meat counter and deli. They carry wine, groceries, cheese, dairy products, groceries and frozen food

In the window at the front of the market is a counter of baked goods. Some of it is from bakeries like Grand Bakery of Oakland. They also sell Irving’s challah.

However most of the baked goods are made in-house. The strudel is the best I’ve had in the Bay Area. They have a good Russian cheese cake too. They will cut as little or large slice as you want from the baked goods.

Cheese strudel: Great farmer’s cheese and raisin filling in a light buttery crust.

Poppy seed strudel: Very good poppy seed filling which tastes like it might have honey wrapped in a flaky buttery crust.

Cheesecake: Very good Russian version that is light and tangy. It is moist and not too dry like some Eastern European cheese cakes.

I didn’t try the fluden. It was honey and nut and didn’t appeal to me but then I look up what this is on the web and it seems it is rare in the U.S. Here’s my question about it on the General Board.

Then again maybe not so rare in the Bay Area. Turns out Crixa sells it under its other name flodni. It seems a fluden/flodni crawl might be called for here.

There was a table at the end of the deli counter with dishes like meatballs, rice, baked chicken and a few other dishes. Anyone looking for a take out hot kosher lunch might consider it.

This market gets referenced occasionally on Chowhound when there are inquiries for matzo, gribnes, schmaltz and especially Empire frozen turkeys.

The meat counter looks empty, but most meat is cut to order, so ask.

This place isn’t much for looks with wooden shelves and little in the way of décor. The market is next door to John Campbell’s Irish Bakery.
