SF Chowhound Holiday Fundraiser, Thurs. 12/20

Melanie Wong | Dec 18, 200108:43 PM     9

Ruth Lafler, Nancy Reyes, Tingting Chang and I invite you to a post-performance late supper and wine tasting on Thursday, 12/20, 9:30pm, at Great Eastern in Chinatown.

Besides celebrating the holidays and the close of a year of great eating courtesy of our Chowhound community, we are privileged to have an appearance by NY Chowhound Tom Meglioranza ("Tom Meg") who is the featured soloist performing Handel's Messiah this week at Grace Cathedral. If you've perused the other boards, you know Tom as a devotee of Asian cuisines and an avid home chef ready to share good cooking tips and recipes. This is your chance to meet Tom and also make a financial contribution to Chowhound.

We've reserved a table for 10 at Great Eastern in San Francisco Chinatown. If there's enough interest, we can start a second table if we reach 16 sign-ups and can take as many as 20. Great Eastern specializes in Cantonese style seafood.

The menu -

Assorted BBQ Platter
Shredded Scallop Soup
Spiced Salt Baked Fresh Dungeness Crab
Fried Squab (two)
Sauteed Fresh Frog
Sauteed Sea Conch and Scallops with Yellow Chives
Sauteed Soft Bean Cake and Chinese Mushroom with Tender Greens
Steamed Fish
Dessert and Fresh Fruit

This is the core menu for 8 participants, $145 plus tax, tip and corkage fees ($8 per bottle). We will add a couple ala carte dishes if we have 10 per table.

Now for the fundraising part - in return for your contribution to Chowhound (minimum $25 per person), we'll have a tasting of various wines donated from my cellar to see which grape varieties and styles are most complimentary to the flavors of a Cantonese dinner.

The wine list -

NV Billecart-Salmon Brut Champagne
1998 Reichsgraf von Kesselstaat Estate Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany)
1994 Lucien Albrecht "Vieilles Vignes" Tokay Pinot Gris (Alsace)
1999 Acorn Russian River Valley Blauer Portugieser
1995 Greenwood Ridge Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
1991 Domaine Trevallon Le Baux rouge (Provence)
1998 Valckenberg "Madonna" Beerenauslese (375 ml, Rheinhessen, Germany)

If we have more than 10 participants, additional wines will be served.

Please bring cash to pay the restaurant costs and your checkbook or cash to make your contribution to Chowhound.

To sign-up, please reply to this message or email me at MsWine@onebox.com.
