Having lived in LA (Westwood more specifically) for four years while attending UCLA, I was spoiled by having access to lots of Japanese food restaurants. There were lots of bad, American-roll places, but the competition also produced many good traditional places, with high quality fish, large selection, and at a good price. For example my favorite place in Westwood was Ishiin. Their price for extremely fresh sake (salmon) nigiri was $2.50 or $2.75. Here in the bay area, your mediocre place will sell it for $3.75 to $4. ugh. I also had very fond memories of Sushi Masu and The Hump, for those that have visited West LA frequently.
Anyways, back in San Jose, I am lucky to live a 3 minute drive away from some good restaurants like Tomisushi, Ramen Halu, DoHenkotsu, and Kitsho (a few minutes further away). I am asking if any of you out there know of any other "traditional" Japanese restaurants (this does not mean only sushi) within 20 miles or so.
Also any recommendations for a place that does omakase sushi and/or omakase for cooked food?
Also any recs for "the best" pho place? I've been to Pho Hoa enough times (because it's close by) and am searching for something different.
I've been to Pho84 in Oakland since it's near my work. Their pho was pretty good.
