Seeking advice on gas/charcoal issue

I hope some helpful Hounds will kick in some info here. The ol' gas grill has finally rusted out so completely that even I am afraid to use it anymore. Time for a replacement, and perhaps an upgrade. Whatever I get will have to be safe to use on a wooden deck. I have managed to get reasonable smoke flavor with the use of porcelain briquettes and soaked woodchips, and have appreciated the convenience of the gas grill (push a button and go, even in the dead of winter). I have been frustrated by the lack of control of the heat (never could get it low enough to really "smoke" the food without burning, even only using one burner and cooking on the cool side). Would I be better served switching to something simple, like a Weber kettle grill? Should I get another gas grill and augment it with a smallish smoker, on the order of the Brinkmann Cajun Cooker? Or a gas grill and a little Weber (Smoky Joe)? Price is an object, also space and versatility. I look forward to all replies.
