It's hot out there and when it is I go native.
First line of defense is a tall glass of Mugicha (roasted barley tea).
If that doesn't chase the heat away then it's time for the big guns which usually has me hunting for a Milk Kintoki (shaved ice with red beans and sweetened condensed milk).
I realize I could walk into a Korean cafe and order Patbingsoo, then "customize" away most of the topings off only to then have the condensed milk added, but I find the flavors to be "off" from what I'm used to, not to mention the puzzled looks I often get. (Don't you want any fruit? We add Mochi and Frozen Yogurt too. And no cereal flakes?)
Nothing against Patbingsoo but there's a time and place for everything, and I tend to like things best when they're pared down.
Sam Woo does something similar to a Milk Kintoki but it's more of a Hong Kong-style that's closer to a coarse slush.
Anyone have any intel on this Japanese summertime treat, or perhaps even a shaved ice shop that has something similar or identical to the Japanese Milk Kintoki? (Anywhere from Kearny Mesa to North County a plus!)
