For a piece of nostalgia there's "Scotty's 66 Bar and Grill" on "Old Route 66" in Hamel Ill. It's about 65 miles south of Springfield and 30 miles north of East St. Louis, Ill. The address is 108 Old Route 66. It's about half a mile west of I-55. You get off at exit 30.
You pull into the gravel parking lot, enter the side facing door and go down a dimly lit stairway to a nice cozy bar with about half a dozen tables. Out back is the refurbished original diner car. Order your dinner and go out to look in the diner. You'll have time. They cook everything fresh.
It's one of those wonderful bar/restaurants that serves "down home" country style cooking at good prices. The food is great. I had a pork steak that was tender and tasty. The mashed potatoes were real, not reconstituted. They start you off with a small container of cheese spread, which they make on premises, along with packaged crackers. If you order the pork chops figure on waiting half an hour to forty-five minutes because these are truly thick and juicy.
I ate much more food than I should eat.
It's truly worth the side trip.
Blessed be, Jim
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure if you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
