Schmidt's - Report [San Francisco]

mariacarmen | Dec 10, 201310:13 PM     11

I had the pleasure of having dinner with Boston CH-er Gretchen S. tonight. We enjoyed, very much, the following:

pea pancakes, house cured salmon, chive sour cream;
home-made chicken liver mousse with grilled bread, red onion and pickles;
plate of cured meats: landjäger, black forest ham, westphalian ham, nusschinken, bauernschinken, and salami, served with bread, butter, sweet and hot mustards, pickle, red onion;
veal schnitzel à la holstein, fried egg, white anchovy fillets, capers served with mashed potato and green salad;
a salad off the daily specials menu of warm apples and caramelized onions and chestnuts over bitter greens; and
leberkäse - pork and veal loaf with a fried egg, roasted onions, and potato salad.

everything was wonderful, save maybe the leberkäse - we didn't hate it, just didn't love it. a little too Spam-like for both of us.

the pea pancakes were sweet and played wonderfully off the salty/smokey salmon and the cool creamy chive sour cream.
the chicken liver mousse was super silky and delicious. i'd have to get this again. loved the housemade sweet pickles on the side. also, the grilled bread (not sure what kind) was fantastic.
the cured meat sampler was great - i am not sure which was which but in my pic the one at the far bottom left was my favorite, with the very fatty juicy thick little batons of porky goodness a close second. but they were all outstanding. loved the pumpernickel bread, and the sweet mustard.
by this point, we were both full, but soldiered on. loved the crispy/tender schnitzel with the buttery egg on top and the anchovies - their salty/brininess cut through the richness of the rest of the dish. the mashed potatoes underneath were buttery and creamy.
with the leberkäse came a very good potato salad, which we also liked.

obviously, we over-ordered, as GS and i always do, and as always she is generous enough to give me the leftovers to take home to the BF. Thanks GS!

and thanks to CH-er linguafood, who helped from afar with recommendations and explanations when i messaged her the menu. special thanks re the beer suggestion - the smoke beer was the awesomest beer i've had - deep, dark, smokey, and not super filling (tho i did only have one). GS had a glass of something red - i'm not sure which, but perhaps she'll chime in.

we arrived at 6:00 p.m. at which point there was only one other party seated. it filled up by the time we left at 8, but it never got too noisy. Our server at first was quite abrupt and even surly, but warmed up after a bit, and the second server who brought most of the dishes was very friendly and helpful.

there is more to this menu that i need to explore.
