brief sawtelle kitchen report

jaydee | Mar 4, 2005 10:10 AM

went there for the very first time last night. very intimate space - and small just like posters have stated. we were seated out on the heated patio. the inside of the restaurant, given the small size of the place, really carried the scent of the kitchen. i know that's unavoidable with any restaurant, but it seemed pretty pronounced with sawtelle kitchen. i did not mind too much given we were seated outside and the smell was not by any means repulsive, just strong.

had the side salad to start, which was nothing to rave about - but i really enjoyed the 'french soy' dressing that came with it. garlicky(?) and creamy, with the bite of some soy - and saved what was really a lifeless bowl of greens and a tomato wedge.

spicy fries came out next - which were really wedge fries with a bit of paprika. not spicy and i'm not too big of a fan of wedge fries. but i was hungry, and they provided me with some mayo which went well with em.

i ordered the vegetable crouquettes and curry. came with rice. curry was decent and the crouquettes were outstanding. i've been looking for good crouquettes, and these were pretty good size and the order came with three. definitely enough to fill up. i know i should have tried the meatloaf - that will be for next time. friend had the salmon, which looked good, he didn't seem to think it was bad or anything.

good place. i dont' know if i would go out of my way or wait for a table - but i wouldn't be opposed to go again.
